L'Heure Bleue Palais, Essaouiria, Morocco
Friendly, relaxing boutique hideaway in the heart of the medina
Classic Room from around £135 per night, including daily breakfast. Flights and transfers available on request.
A laid-back oasis set in the heart of Essaouira's medina, L'Heure Bleue is a charming Relais & Châteaux hotel with rooms set around a typical Moroccan courtyard and a fabulous rooftop swimming pool with far reaching views over the bay and the fort.
Accommodation
The 33 rooms and suites are clustered around the hotel's central courtyard - a tranquil hideout of palm-trees, day-beds and inviting loungers -and have been designed to reflect the influences of Africa, Europe and the Orient. Rooms on the upper floors are quieter and brighter. For a bath tub, you'll need to book a suite as standard rooms only have showers. Most suites also have fireplaces separating the bedrooms from the sitting areas. The Oriental Suites are a sensuous deep red. All rooms have flat screen televisions with French and English channels, WiFi, hair dryer, safe, dry cleaning service available and bathrobes.
Activities & Experiences
A number of activities are available locally, including golf, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, sailing, surfing, wind surfing and camel rides. Of course, Essaouira itself is a fascinating walled harbour town with a lovely medina. All easily explored on foot. The Atlantic ocean and Essaouira's vast sandy beaches are close by too. You could also visit a local Argan oil co-operative or take a traditional Moroccan cookery class.
Facilities & Services
A Moroccan-style breakfast of dark coffee, fresh fruits, and pastries is served in the open-air courtyard, while light lunch is offered either here or on the hotel's rooftop terrace, overlooking the city. L'Heure Bleue's restaurant serves an a la carte menu with a blend of Moroccan specialities and French classics. The locally caught fresh fish dishes are a particular highlight.
The hotel has rooftop pool, sun loungers, and a small spa offering a range of treatments including hammam. There's also a wonderful colonial styled bar, plus a private cinema and a billiards room.
Weather & Seasons
Spring (March to May) is pleasantly warm and sunny, and the landscape is lush and green. Avoid August when the town gets swamped by large numbers of visitors from home and abroad. Autumn (mid Sept to mid Nov) is also lovely, but the countryside tends to look parched.
Getting Here
Most visitors arrive via Marrakech’s Menara Airport, which you can reach from various airports in the UK with British Airways and Easyjet. Direct flights from London Gatwick take 3 hours 45 minutes. The drive from Marrakech takes 2 hours 30 minutes. Alternatively, there are direct flights with Royal Air Maroc from Paris Orly to Essaouira.
Recommendations Nearby
L'Heure Bleue is just one of a handful of boutique hideaways within the walls of the medina (such as Madada Mogador) and nearby that we can recommend. If you're after something with more facilities and that's also more family orientated, we would suggest Sofitel Essaouira.
